HEY GIRL Goes to Lost Village Festival: An Immersive Experience

Last year HEY GIRL magazine at Lost Village festival –

“If you go down to the woods today…”

You might have found hundreds of raving people, lights flashing, beats echoing everywhere… and you might just have got ‘Lost’ in it! Ha ha :)

Lost Village Festival creates a unique mix of music, art, and adventure. With different “lands”, from abandoned aircrafts in the woods to a disused fairground and ghost train, there are so many areas to discover, each with its own music and vibe… ok, let’s do this.

“HEY GIRL… What’s next? What’s down this path?”

We started walking in just as dusk fell, and the atmosphere of discovery immediately swept over us. “What’s next? What’s down this path? What are those lights down there?” Soon, our inner kids were fully immersed in the festival adventure. The main area was buzzing, alive with sound and energy. We followed a path toward a lake, drawn by lights and the pull of something unknown.

On our HEY GIRL journey of discovery, we stumbled upon a log cabin of funk in the woods, with a DJ inside spinning 70s and 80s tracks. The vibe—colors, fun, and pure carefree energy—was alive in the crowd. Wow, this “cabin of funk” became our favorite spot to check in with for the rest of the festival.

“Wow, this ‘Cabin of Funk’ became our favourite spot.”

On the second day, the wellbeing area was a welcome retreat — ah, rest and peace. We really loved the workshops—breathwork, yoga, and so much more. It was incredibly freeing to be immersed in this energy of peace and love. We would love to see this area grow next year — bigger and more of it, please, Lost Village!

As the last night approached and the feeling of wonder and adventure still lingered, we joined the crowd for Bonobo’s set. The lights were magical, the beats were transportive, and the energy got into your body and soul. This guy knows how to move a crowd, right?

So the live music came to a close, we hopped onto the ghost train carts to chat and reflect. With a cheesy toastie in our hands, we stumbled back to our tents. HEY GIRL magazine at The Lost Village festival adventure may be over, but it’s certainly not forgotten. Here’s to this year, eh!

HEY GIRL Radio: Gabby Wilson

Swedish singer-songwriter Gabby Wilson’s latest single “The End” is a eulogy for a relationship past the point of saving…

While she mourns, Wilson couldn’t resist glossing the track with an offbeat, bittersweet coating. It speaks to Wilson’s instincts as a pop singer, with a capital P, unafraid to shake up everything you’ve come to expect.

“The End” is a pop-indebted final fanfare, complete with theatrical sweeps, yet it’s far from conventional. While she wears her vulnerabilities on her sleeve with rolling drums and twinkling piano, the track also fizzes with synths and distortion. The track has the golden touch of Phil Greiss (Jason Derulo, Nicki Minaj, David Guetta, J Balvin) who has mixed and mastered “The End” to a highly polished sheen.

Gabby Wilson’s music is not just sonic, but sensory. The Swedish singer-songwriter’s style is a canvas spattered with a thousand influences – it looks as striking as it sounds.

LOVE. LIFE

With the release of this track, another side to Gabby Wilson unfolds. As well as co-writing on Katrina Stuart’s fizzy banger “In My Veins“, her debut single “Hug It Out” was an infectious pop confection about barely concealing the cracks of a relationship falling apart at the seams. With the likes of Human Human, Lefuturewave and Clout on board with Gabby Wilson, she’s already promising to be a new rising star in the world of Scandipop.

“The End” is the next – and final – chapter in that story. She says:

“I wrote this song after my long-term partner and I decided to go our separate ways to kill a relationship that was killing us. It’s about having unfulfilled dreams, and the everyday coming between you both in a relationship. Even when you break up you find yourself still unable to fully let go.”

GET TO KNOW: SINGER SONGWRITER ‘UPSAHL’

BEEN THERE, SEEN IT >> ‘UPSAHL’ MADE THE HEY GIRL T_SHIRT!!

We are buzzed to introduce the amazing singer songwriter UPSAHL.
Wow this girl has talent, we just love her UPSAHL vibes and style. We hanged out in the digital land, made a collaborative one off HEY GIRL/UPSAHL Tee and chatted all about her music and new single!!! The new single ‘STOP’ is Featured of the HEY GIRL Radio page here.
Let’s chat….
“My sound is … Bad bitch music to dance to while you cry.”

Hi there , what have you been up to today?
I’m on my 4th coffee and making some TikToks before I start a writing session over Zoom.

What can you see out the window right now?
My neighbor’s front yard. I lowkey feel bad for them because I forget the window is open half the time and have truly become “the naked neighbour in the window.”

How would you describe your music?
Bad bitch music to dance to while you cry.

Tell us about your new single ‘STOP’
STOP! is an unapologetic, sexually empowering song. I could go into some deep explanation of how we wrote the song, but it’s really just about being horny waiting for your significant other to come over – ha!

When did you first get into music?
My dad was in punk bands when I was growing up, so I was drawn to the music scene at a really young age. We had a band room in the house and I started learning instruments as soon as I could walk. My love for music and songwriting kind of snowballed from there.

How would you describe your style?
For many reasons, most notably my last minute nature, I’ve found myself cutting up my clothes (pants, tops, etc) and mixing and matching. I’ve also been feeling very “red” for the past year or so.

What pulls us apart?…  Close minded people. I feel like the world would be a much better place if people would just open their hearts and have new experiences.”

What’s your favourite thing about Instagram?
IG Stories. The fact that Instagram archives them allows you to look back at basically a video journal of all the things you’ve done. Whenever I get sad about not being able to tour, I just rewatch all my stories from when I was on the road and re-live them.

What don’t you like about Instagram?
It can be toxic. Everyone is guilty of only showing the best version of themselves on IG, so we’re all just scrolling through unrealistic expectations all day. It can fuck with my head pretty quickly, so I only really use IG to post and talk to my fans.

Where has been you best gig?
Lollapalooza in Chicago! It was my first festival and I didn’t think anybody would come and right as I walked onto the stage a sea of people showed up and rocked the fuck out with me!

What’s the power of live music?
It’s everythinggg. Live music is one of the few things that really brings people together, no matter what their differences are. At the end of the day, we’re all at a show because we like the same music and want to have a good time.

What brings us together?
Music ^^

What pulls us apart?
Close minded people. I feel like the world would be a much better place if people would just open their hearts and have new experiences.

“Live music is one of the few things that really brings people together, no matter what their differences are. At the end of the day, we’re all at a show because we like the same music and want to have a good time.”

How do you feel when you sing?
Singing makes me feel the comfort of home. I sing a lot at home, whether it’s writing a new song, singing a song from another artist I love or just humming.

What’s the oldest guitar you have?
I have a tiny guitar that my parents gave me when I was 5 years old. I learned how to play guitar on it.

Where would you like to be in 5 years?
If I can be doing what I’m doing now, but on a larger scale and connecting with more fans, I’ll be stoked. Just being able to make music everyday is a dream already.

Ask HEY GIRL a question?
I love Hey Girl’s focus on female empowerment and lifting each other up. What inspired that?

Great question and thanks for the big up, well being a guy and in the Photography industry for over 20 years, I have seen sides of it that were it wasn’t equal and there was this pressure on women on the way they looked and how they should be. And so I wanted to creative Magazine where its was more about freedom and individual creativity, a safe creative positive media space to free up people from old outdated stereotypes and celebrate diversity!!

NO ONE should be made to feel bad for who they are or feel pressure to be anything other themselves.

GET TO KNOW: MAISIE PETERS

AT ONLY 18 YEARS OLD THIS POP SONGSTRESS IS ALREADY BIG NEWS…WE LOVE HER.

From posting her first youtube video at 14 in 2015, a beautiful song called “Electric” written and preformed by her, you could tell this girl is has real talent. Now she is signed to Atlantic records with a big following on youtube and instagram and she’s still only 18 …amazing eh. We get a chance to catch up with her at THE GREAT ESCAPE festival in her and our hometown of Brighton.

Good morning Maisie… mmm that’s very formal eh .. ha .. What are the kids saying on the street these days for hello…ha?
Oh dear, I don’t know, I’m not very street! Actually, I rate good morning, feels very nice and comforting so let’s bring it back.

Ok let’s start with the obvs .. when did you start playing music ?
I think I was 12 when I first borrowed my friends guitar and taught myself ‘Downtown’ by Lady Antebellum.

How old where you when you wrote your 1st song?
Well, I found a notebook of my first ever written songs the other day and there was one about sandcastles written in 2008 when I would have been 8 – scintillating stuff!

How was the great escape festival?
So fun! Brighton is my hometown and the best city in England (I am biased though) and I saw so many friendly lovely faces at the front which was so nice.

“Brighton is my hometown and the best city in England (I am biased though) and I saw so many friendly lovely faces at the front which was so nice.”

How do you feel when you play on stage?
Excited, very focused – it’s almost an out of body experience where you become simultaneously very aware of everything you’re saying and singing but also very unaware of the world around you.

Where would like to escape too?
Right now I have this random need to go skiing, which, seeing as I?ve been twice and I’m average at best is strange. I am obsessed with snow though so maybe that’s some of it.

Who’s been you biggest influence on your music?
Impossible question! If you make any sort of art there must be at least a dozen huge inspirations that made you start out, so if I was to list just a few I would say Taylor Swift, Lily Allen, First Aid Kit, The Vaccines, so many!

What would your HEY GIRL song be?
Uhhhh, well if we are going for namesake then Maren Morris’s song GIRL is amazing; she talks about female relationships and the intricacies of them, jealousy and understanding that we do not have to preserve societies almost predetermined setting of pitting us against each other. So bang that on your playlist and dedicate it to your best friend!

Fav lyric?
Another impossible question! I have so many, just one of them would be ‘Kathy I’m lost, I said / Although I knew she was sleeping’ from the song ‘America’ by Simon & Garfunkel, a song that actually inspired my song ‘Stay Young’.

What gives you the most ideas?
Being in bed, trying to go to sleep, normally past midnight.

How do you feel about social media?
Overwhelmingly positive, I think it’s become such an invaluable space of learning and friendship and acceptance for so many.

As a women do you feel pressure about the way you look?
Always, largely from myself. But I’m also hugely inspired by Jameela Jamil and other amazing feminists who are trying to break down how women have subconsciously been made to feel about our natural bodies.

“I’m also hugely inspired by Jameela Jamil and other amazing feminists who are trying to break down how women have subconsciously been made to feel about our natural bodies..”

Our next issue is ‘Spirit and Adventure’ …. where’s been your best adventure?
I went to LA for a month at the beginning of this year which was an albeit very work focused adventure haha – it took me out of my comfort zone though which I think is why it counts.

What does the word ‘Spirit’ mean to you?
Determination, an inner strength that you keep as a last reserve for tricky times.

How do you keep yourself positive?
Remind myself of all the good things I have, and weirdly remember that no one gets everything in life, so it?s fine if some things slip away because it’s natural and normal and other things will come!

What do you want people to get from your music?
I want them to feel understood, like they aren’t alone – I want them to be able to take my songs and make them soundtracks for moments in their life, their bus journeys, their pres before a night out. I just want to be necessary to someone.

Chocolate or chips?
Chocolate, every single time.

What question would you like to ask HEY GIRL ?
Answer all these questions! And then send me your answers via carrier pigeon.
Phew thats gonna take a while .. let us find a small pen … or how about we just get a plastic cup and some string and can chat over that .. old school ..ha xxx

Big thanks to Maisie…Love HG x

GET TO KNOW: ELLE EXXE

elle exxe gig taken by hey girl
HEY GIRL catches up with the high energy electro pop star “Elle Exxe”

I wake up on wednesday morning, do the usual check instagram .. that mixed feeling of is social media really good for me.
Oh I got a message…. oh cool an invite to a free gig on Friday, Elle Exxe a female musician playing at ‘The Great Escape festival’, in my home town of brighton. No brainer eh, I didn’t have time to check out Elle’s music … I came off another shoot (busy time at the music festival) … its was still light out. Found the location, but I was late so the gig had already started … down the stairs and into the dark. Boom the atmosphere hits me!!! The room was dark with electric light flashing on stage and full of people and smoke machine on.
Here’s Elle on stage commanding the room with her energy and talent of electric dance music, with a great connection with the crowd. I am feeling I really lucky to be invited … out the camera comes and I shoot away thinking these pics are going to look amazing with style and creativity of Elle… Yeahhhhhhhhhh… check them out.

Simon :)
Owner and founder of HEY GIRL

We had a chance to have little chat with Elle Exxe….

What you doing at the moment?
I’m practicing one of my new songs on piano because I’m gonna be performing it tonight on BBC Radio London.

Was great to see you live on stage thanks for the gig invite!!, so I wanted know about how you feel on stage .. whats it like?
Thanks for coming down. On stage I feel wild and free, like I can do anything and that I’m where I’m meant to be.

When did your love of music start?
I think it’s something I was born with. I was always drawn to sounds. Even when I was 6, I was trying to compose stories on the piano..it sounded terrible of course, but I loved it. I was obsessed with the charts every Friday and Sunday and would spend all my pennies buying tapes and CD’s again..I wasn’t buying the good stuff – Steps, Lil Bow Wow and Shaggy were some of my early purchases.

What influences your songs?
Lyrically I’m influenced by my experiences and high contrast emotions. Musically I’m influenced by the idea of innovation, bravery and passion, the idea of doing things a little new or different and making something striking and dynamic. I love producers and artists like Kanye, Gaga, Pharrell, Charli XCX, and even directors like John Waters and Nadia Lee. They can all make pop but they always manage to do it in a unique, stylish, fascinating way.

“I’m often described as quiet and introverted off stage…so new friends are shocked firstly to hear that I’m a performer.”

Do you have a different personality on stage?
I don’t consider it a different personality, but I’m certain a lot of others would describe it that way. I’m often described as quiet and introverted off stage so new friends are shocked firstly to hear that I’m a performer and secondly to then witness it when I get onstage and start throwing myself around, entertaining people and demanding attention. I think it confuses people, but I’m all about that. I want people to question their first-impressions – we all judge others far too quickly. We meet someone and think we know their life story and what type of person they are, sometimes even just by the clothes they’re wearing or the shape of their body – but it’s rare for those judgements to be worthwhile. For me I believe we?re all walking contradictions and my quiet reserved side and brash outgoing side are both parts of the same person.

Who been your musical idol?
Freddie Mercury.

Our next issue is called ‘Spirit and Adventure’,  Wheres been your best adventure?
I did a little tour in South Korea. I was hella nervous because I couldn’t speak a word of Korean the day I left and I was nervous about whether I’d be into the food and whether they’d be into my music.. but it was my best adventure. I learnt a few phrases and had the crowds dancing and singing with me except the night the show got shut down by the police cause I was too loud *oops*. I tried Korean BBQ and Kimchi and all that stuff, found my favourite new drink – Soju and tried everything else they had to offer. The jet-lag was crazy so my friends and I would stay up til 6am enjoying the nightlife – literally the whole town would stay open all night – the clubs closed at 10am in the morning, same with the arcades. The whole trip was a beautiful blur.

What does the word spirit mean to you?
It’s not something you can put your hands on or really describe in words. It’s someones true energy. It’s the part of them you miss the most when they’re gone.

“I wrote, produced, mixed, mastered, and filmed my song ‘Queen’ with an all female crew to highlight this problem…”

How do you make yourself feel positive?
I try to stay grounded and grateful – I’ll go for a walk, or write down what I’m grateful for, or read a book and try and get myself back into the moment. I feel like the negativity comes when you’re looking back or forward. I try to remember the things I love doing, the amazing things I’ve done and the things I still want to do. I write down action plans for how I’m going to do the things I want to do. And when all else fails, I lie back and pretend I’m on my own imaginary island.

What advise would you have for your younger self?
Go out more you don’t need to work 24 hours a day.

What needs to happen more in the world?
Compassion and a greater effort to understand each other – this’ll be a little easier once there is more diversity and equality in the top levels of the most powerful businesses and governments.

What 10 words describe yourself?
Bold, dreamer, open-minded, understanding, ambitious, crazy, creative, frustrated, fulfilled.

Have you even seen colours when you make music or sing?
Yes. When I was programming the lights for my show I programmed the colours I felt coincided with the music. Music is definitely colourful!

Do you find there’s any sexism in music?
Yes, it’s huge. Women only make up 17% of artists in the charts, and only 1 in 49 songs have a female producer. 98% of songs in the charts have either a male songwriter or producer..most have both and a male artist too. The stats are important because it’s easy to get it twisted and think it’s an even playing-field because there are a few very successful women that get a lot of press and media attention. But the spaces for women are limited and controlled in a way that they aren’t for men. 78% of women in the UK music industry claim to have experienced sexism the story within the record labels is very similar, most boardrooms in the music business are overpopulated with straight white men. I wrote, produced, mixed, mastered, and filmed my song ‘Queen’ with an all female crew to highlight this problem.

Whats your fav lyric?
I’ll give you my top 5.
‘It’s always darkest before the dawn’ – Florence and the Machine.
‘You’re the shit and I?m knee deep in it’ – Frightened Rabbit
‘I need to think shallow thoughts so that I don’t fall too deep in water I can’t tame, cause that’s the only way I know how to stay breathing’ – Carys Selvey
‘Or for anyone who’s ever been through shit in they lives So they sit and they cry at night, wishin’ they’d die ‘Til they throw on a rap record and they sit and they vibe We’re nothin’ to you, but we’re the fuckin’ shit in they eyes’ – Eminem
‘Chasing after the dreams of my past, always missing that one thing I lack, it’s the best thing that i never had’ – Elle Exxe.

Do you have a go to dance move?
Oh yes. I call it ‘the fit’. It’s basically manic flailing.

If you emoji yourself ..what would it be?
??

How many people do you high five today?
I don’t often high five but I actually ‘high tenned’ my husband about an hour ago and hit him in the nose by accident. I should be banned.

Where do you want to be in 10 years?
I wanna have built my studio in my garden, have had a top ten album, have a sold-out world tour under my belt, have a couple of legendary kids, have some evidence that I’ve made people’s lives better, be employing creative people and paying them well, and for those around me to be healthy and happy and for me to be able to take them all away on holiday somewhere mad.

Any questions for HEY GIRL?
How many people do you high five a day?
Not enough… going to do more today :)

When will this come out?

Its out now!!! yeah !!!
Big Love HG xx

GET TO KNOW : CAT

We chat to CAT an Art Pop Singer/Songwriter from LA, ooooh she has a sultry songbird tone and dark synth vibes, Influenced by pop culture and style.

So CAT ..where did that name come from?
My name is Catherine and it started as a family nickname. I was called Kitty Chan because my family and I was living in Japan at the time and the Sanrio Hello Kitty character is called Kitty-chan, so the nickname fit for me. I since then started introducing myself as Cat!

When did you start singing?
I?ve been singing my whole life. I did musicals as a kid and began songwriting when I was 7.

How does singing make you feel?
I feel my most confident when singing. I’ve grown to like my voice and the way I write and observe the world.

Whats your fav film of all time?
Jurassic Park.

What do you find hard in life?
I?m working on speaking up when something hurts me. I find that I usually shut down and will internalize, which is a self-reflection I touch on in Strawberry Milkshake.

What do you find easy in life?
Writing and creating! In addition to songwriting, I write screenplays, plays/musicals, books, and poems.

Who’s your music idol?
Prince and Debbie Harry.

How can music help people?
It helps make you understand you’re not alone. Everyone experiences ‘life’ events and feelings differently but there’s a special connection that brings people together in the storytelling and vulnerability that comes with music.

Whats LA like at the mo?
It’s in that state of confusion when it’s Fall but still 90 degrees. I’ve discovered a lot of living in LA is just dealing with traffic and how to get creative with hiding your sweat.

Where do you want to be in 10 years?
Still writing and making music and to be world touring!

What ten words describe yourself?
Caring, creative, homebody, introspective, funny, weird, ambitious, fun, hypochondriac, and an open book.

Where do you want to go on an adventure?
I have been wanting to go to Japan! I spent my early years of childhood in Tokyo and haven’t been back since. I would love to go back and explore, revisit places I can remember, and discover new places to explore. I also ‘stalk’ the TokyoSea Disneyland Instagram page time to time and that just furthers my case.

Make up a Hey Girl song lyric for us now .. ha ha ?
“I’m not just anybody I’m a Hey Girl and I love my body” <3 (haha).

You got a dance move?
I got a couple of moves! I love dancing. I don’t know what I’m doing but it’s never stopped me. My kitchen and living room are my favourite stages.

How you found any barriers with equality in your life?
It’s difficult in the workplace as a female artist. I will either be paid very little or not at all and with my style and clothing choices, men touch me or assume that’s what I want. It’s frustrating and appalling to have to apologize for my body and my rejection in order to feel safe. You shouldn’t have to apologize or be polite to those who make you feel small and weak.

How we going to make this messed up world a better place?
I’m not going to say to smile at strangers, but being aware of and caring for others makes a small, but big difference in someone’s day. Ask for proper pronouns, ask what you can do to help, ask how someone is, do favors without wanting something in return. If you can be there for your friends and loved ones, that’s already making a difference in someone’s world. There are so many things that are messed up, especially where the US is right now. But, if you can be there for someone who needs you, that’s the personal change you can bring about to make this world a better place.

Do you see patterns in your life?
I do! I do a lot of my best thinking when I?m in my car. It’s where I can blast music and yell, cry, or laugh. Cars are an intimate space for me. A lot of my songs take place when I’m driving.

Who do you see in the mirror?
How I see myself is constantly changing in both?a?literal and figurative sense. I have depression, anxiety and body dysmorphia, but I try to be strong and constantly am wanting to better myself for me and those who are around me. The reason why I say this is because these are certain things that a lot of people struggle with and shouldn’t be a taboo to talk about. The more we are open are with each other, the more opportunities there are for understanding each other. That’s why my music is about my stories and I hope people can relate.

A big thanks to CAT for this beautiful insightful interview .. xx
