GET TO KNOW: HI CACTI

Hi Cacti is a cool Brighton based independent shop thats all about cacti, We popped in to say hi to Sabina the owner and founder, checked out all her amazing stock and her new book.
Let’s see what’s so great about these cool plants.
” I’m very passionate about sharing how beneficial plants are for us…”

For the readers .. you got a cool accent .. where’s that from?
Surprisingly with my Yankee twang I’m actually from rural Suffolk originally! Just to throw ya off! But we moved to Austin Texas when I was 7 and that’s where I spent most of my youth till 22 hence losing my English accent for my American accent. I have dual nationality with my mum being English from london and my dad being an Italian American New Yorker- which massively shaped who I am as I feel very ‘transatlantic’ with my vocab & upbringing, etc.

So … what’s so great about Cacti’s?
They are just awesome all around! Structural so therefore sort of architectural! They’re Survivors! They have preferences to thrive but they are still able to ‘bloom where they are planted’ so to speak which I really admire and appreciate. Also cacti are long living and can outlive us – such as the immense & impressively tall saguaro cacti in the Sonoran desert in areas like Arizona, Southern California, and northern Mexico which can live a couple hundred years and grow 40ft+. Because of there slow growth and ages this means they can usually be passed down and exchange households and generations which I think is really beautiful. I inherited my 1st cacti collection from my grandmother ‘Nanny Joy’ which really inspired the start of my whole business after she passed away. There are so many varieties too so they are I think one of the more interesting, varied, and easy plants to keep! Just a sunny spot, minimal watering and Bob’s your uncle!

LOVE. LIFE

Tell us about your fab new book?
Thanks and yes I’m super excited that the book is out now as it was a long time in the making! A publisher approached me about writing it about 2.5 years ago, so it’s so unreal and amazing to finally be a fabricated product in the shop and being sold in other peoples shops around the world!
It’s mind blowing and I feel over the moon! The basis of the book is to talk about the benefits of plant care as a form of self care and to hopefully talk about simple and accessible ways to add nature and botanicals into your daily life. There’s lots of info about the benefits mentally & physically, plant projects and crafts, plant based recipes and botanical drinks, and lots of plant hacks, tips, and styling ideas! I truly believe in the power of plants over just them looking pretty in a pot on your desk and I’m very passionate about sharing how beneficial it is for us to connect to nature and add some greenery to our daily and usually digital lives!

How would you describe the colours of your shop .. in a sound?
A tropical beat for sure! Picture that random cool colourful chick around that beach bomb fire tapping a simple bongo beat… that prob out Cabana colour pallet vibe.

How would you describe the experience of walking into your shop?
Between the colours, beachy texmex products and tropical greenery I strive to make the shop feel like a holiday or a little oasis from the city. Our mantra is very ‘mi Casa Es su casa’ and I really love creating a space that transports people and stops them in their tracks for a moment’s escape.

“Ironically people always see the big guys in my window like cowboy cacti with big spikes and are fearful of them …”

What’s been the coolest place you have been on your travels?
Super tough call. But I would say New Orleans is one of my favorite cities I’ve ever been to, as it has it’s own completely unique vibe and mix of influences and cultures. It feels so Unique to the city itself, very Cajun, voodoo, French, southern, jazzy, arty, etc and I adore the pride that people from Nola have. But also Arizona state as a whole is epically beautiful, so varied from snow capped mountains & pine tree forests to red rocked canyons with waterfalls and cacti filled desserts. Tucson in particular makes my soul sing and changed my life going there and now we try to visit their deserts every winter if we can!

How did you end up in Brighton?
I came for a summer when I was at university in Austin and never left! And that was 15 years ago. Haha 😂 my mum being English I had the passport and wanted to make sure I took advantage of it at some point in my life, and came halfway thru uni for a summer break to work at a pub and fell in love with Brighton and didn’t want to leave.

Which is your spikiest cactus?
Ironically people always see the big guys in my window like cowboy cacti with big spikes and are fearful of them but it’s actually more like the little guys with small thin hairlike spikes like prickly pear cacti that really get cha as they are super fine and hard to get out and hard to see.

Where do you want to be in 10 years?
I would love to be splitting my time between running my business here in England and also out of the southwest of America, perhaps with another ‘Hi Cacti’ location or 2. Out of either Southern California like Joshua tree and/or Austin or Tucson, driving around in my 80’s Orange Ford bronco delivering cacti between desert hikes. ;-)

How can the HEY GIRL readers find you?
The HEY GIRL gang can find me online on my ‘gram @hi_cacti or my website www.hicacti.com

Otherwise pop by the shop and say ‘Hi’ on the Brighton seven dials.

Big thanks to Sabina for chatting to us .. if you fancy a lovely book or Cacti for a little present check out the shop and website.

HEY GIRL Radio: Aibai

Aibai has just dropped a double release with singer Colby Hansen.

“Aura” is a whirlpool of excitement, narrating a queer relationship and the emotions of seeing a cute girl in a crowd at a concert and wanting to dance with her. “All Night” speaks about being in a relationship that you may have to sacrifice due to moving somewhere to chase your dreams and potentially losing the relationship forever due to that.

LOVE. LIFE

Aibai is a 23-year-old producer based in Minneapolis. Her songs are filled with ambient, cinematic soundscapes that create a daydream-like atmosphere. Originally focusing on making electronic music, the young musician has started to diversify her sound in her recent releases, exploring more of the alternative, indie and R&B realm. Inspired by electronic artists like Odesza and Flume, as well as indie/alt greats such as Clairo, Rex Orange County and Goth Babe, Aibai combines these two worlds, while giving it a unique flair of her own.

“Aura” featuring Colby Hansen is the ultimate masterpiece of dreamy, romantic, summer warmth. The track enters with mirrored rolling waves of synths, oscillating and gently pulsing over harmonic chords glazed in an undeniable uplifting aura. Lyrically the song is a whirlpool of excitement, narrating a queer relationship and the emotions of seeing a cute girl in a crowd at a concert and wanting to dance with her. The song exemplifies the feelings of nervousness and excitement of meeting someone new and wanting to connect on a deeper level. Aibai shares, “I feel like with the pandemic, live music has really taken a toll and this song just makes me want to get out, play a show, dance, enjoy the company of friends and live to the fullest”. Aibai describes the track as a means of bringing hope to the future of live performances and life getting moving again.

HEY GIRL Radio: Mason Rose Gray

Florida artist, Mason Rose Gray. Her latest track “SURVIVE”

Florida artist, Mason Rose Gray. Her latest track “SURVIVE” is the ultimate track for reclaiming your power after a painful break-up. The track bleeds in pain and Billie Eilish-esque tenderness, with moving, husky vocals flooded in emotion and juxtaposed feelings.

Her start in life wasn’t easy. Growing up in poverty, her dreams were put on the backburner, while her family struggled to find money for food and clothes. Her father was controlling and abusive, leaving her feeling powerless. She confides, “Eager to escape that life I put my focus, drive and ambition into pursuing a career that would sustain me financially. I got my bachelors degree in nursing before the age of 21. I vowed to never go back. Although, never fully processing my childhood, the fear of abandonment led me into a long term relationship.” Soon beginning to feel controlled by her girlfriend, Gray felt desperate to escape the housewife trap and reconnect with her true authentic self.

LOVE. LIFE

Whilst nursing a mentally dark place, Gray fought through the pain and heartbreak, with songwriting allowing her to express this. Her intimate, debut single “SURVIVE” was written during a bittersweet period of her life. Inspired by the end of a nine-year relationship, the track details the need for soul-searching and reclaiming her life. Gray divulges, “After my relationship, it was the first time I had been alone and on my own. Sitting at my dining table I looked to my left and old flowers were covered in cobwebs. That’s how my first line came about. The rest developed while hiking and doing a lot of soul searching. I used pain, heartbreak and love from my childhood, adolescence and adulthood.”

HEY GIRL Radio: Slugs

rock band in the desert
The new visuals from Los Angeles alt rock band SLUGS have arrived! “I Could Do Better” emits a reflective and experimental sonic appeal through it’s trippy, psychedelic feel.

SLUGS is a four-piece alt rock outfit out of Los Angeles comprised of singer/songwriter/guitarist Marissa Longstreet, Sarsten Noice (bass/vocals), Josh Beavers (lead guitar) and Dash Hutton (drums). Their influences range from Linda Perhacs with their melodic harmonies and tenderness to Thee Oh Sees with their high energy, spitfire performances.

SLUGS latest tune “I Could Do Better” got it’s title after enduring a flight from a poor choice of airline, when the idea of I could do better humorously arose. Later working with a friend the song was written and developed at a time when exploring the journey of sobriety, where the lyrics took a deeper dive into the meaning. The song narrates wanting to find a way back to the blissful naivety of being a child, as well as the wonderful and complicated revelations and the highs and lows during the process of grounding. Longstreet shares, “I compared my carefree attitude as a child, finger painting an image of nothing, to the “I don’t care” attitude of my 20’s. I wrote this song as if it were an intervention on myself, and I was playing both sides. I wanted to find my way back to carefree innocence coming from a place of sinister repetition and complacency.”

LOVE. LIFE

“I Could Do Better” emits a reflective and experimental sonic appeal through it’s trippy, psychedelic feel. Somewhat woozy and chill, the song has subtle peaks and falls with wavering vocal melodies that metaphorically pronounce the verified range of emotions. Through jingling high-hats, rocking, rich electric riffs, twangy guitars and a range of percussion that has a softer, tropical sound, “I Could Do Better” is truly transcending. The vocals are soft and restrained, yet clear and powerful, adding to the juxtaposition of the feelings around the journey of going sober. Longstreet explains, “I think the theme is a voyage of floating in space, the big chaotic crash down and every small step after in getting grounded.”

SLUGS have been on tours with LP & The Districts and have opened for Jessica Lea Mayfield, Joywave, Lets Eat Grandma & The Mattson II. Having garnered acclaim from the likes of Refinery29, Live Nation’s Ones to Watch, American Songwriter and Earmilk, SLUGS are certainly an artist to watch in 2021.

HEY GIRL Radio: Nana M. Rose

Singer-songwriter Nana M. Rose has dropped her long-anticipated debut EP Morning Drops & Lemon Seeds. Skillfully bridging the gap between ethereal indie-folk and big and bold pop ballads, this stunning five-track EP is a journey through Rose’s mind and emotions exploring both the highs and lows of life. The poetic lyricism, powerful ballad vocals and glaze of pop gives the ultimate collection of relatable bangers.

Rotterdam-based singer-songwriter Nana M. Rose writes beautiful, intimate piano ballads, carried by her incredible, larger-than-life voice. Her songs are reminiscent of Adele’s stirring style and have a dreamy, cinematic flair evocative of Lana del Rey. Nana’s delicate, poetic lyrics explore the meaning of human connection in an ultra-competitive, individualistic world. As a child, Nana started playing the violin, the classical influence of which is still reflected in her carefully crafted melodies and arrangements. In combination with later inspirations like Lianne la Havas and Matt Corby, a unique pop-sound steeped in melancholy and weltschmerz has been born.

LOVE. LIFE

Her long-anticipated debut EP Morning Drops & Lemon Seeds, presents a truly riveting body of work that showcases her incredible talent as both a songwriter and vocal performer in all its facets and glory. Skillfully bridging the gap between ethereal indie folk and big and bold pop ballads, Nana has created relatable anthems for the masses.

The EP embodies the two sides of extreme emotion that she explores throughout her songs, from dark despair to being on top of the world. Nana confides, ”The contradictions really portray the duality of feelings for me. While writing this EP I went through my own journey of self reinvention, and this search contained a lot of contrasting feelings that confused me.”

The poppy indie number “4AM” encapsulates the feeling of wanting to be out and dancing – a feeling that everyone can relate to during those long months of lockdown. “Imagine closing your eyes and remembering a person you miss, wishing they were with you in that moment. To me, the song is filled with this urge to be free again, to connect with other people on the dancefloor again.”

“Dream”, is a gorgeous ballad about parental love and makes the singer’s voice shine yet again. Nana reveals, “My parents have been the most dedicated parents I could have wished for and I love them so much, so this is kind of a love song from me for them.”

Nana has built a dedicated fanbase across the globe, having toured the UK, New York and The Netherlands. She was nominated for the 2020 Rotterdam ‘Song of the Year’ award and received airplay from notable stations in both the UK and on leading Dutch radio flagships. It has just been announced that Nana has been selected for this year’s ‘Popronde’, a prestigious showcase festival with various shows all across the Netherlands between September and November this year.

HEY GIRL Radio: Raina Sokolov-Gonzalez

New single from New York Jazz, R&B artist Raina SokolovGonzalez
“The Bear” grapples with a need to be desired, while reflecting on an encounter with a shadowy figure who doesn’t have the best of intentions. With a playful musical arrangement, this song turns a hard feeling into a playground of imagination and possibility, turning shadowy characters into bears and crows, turning doubt upside down and finding its flirtatious, sexy edge

Raina Sokolov-Gonzalez is a singer/composer based in Brooklyn, New York. Born into a family of musicians, music was Raina’s first language and it runs deep within her veins. Rooted in Jazz and R&B, the songwriter invites us into her unique sonic world with harmonic nuance and lyrical poetry.

Raina’s cross-genre style is built from the bottom up. With improvisation as a starting point for her songs, Raina draws on her emotionality and leans into her perception of the world around, uncovering hidden depths within daily life and articulating personal truth with vulnerability and bravery. Songwriting is her way of processing and understanding life in all its complexity.

LOVE. LIFE

If They’re Mine is a cross-section of Raina’s internal landscape, the questions and dynamics that inhabited her for a long period of time. The songwriter shares, “I have formative tensions around desire and deception, around dissociation and attachment. Written in 2017 and 2018, these songs are of a young woman grappling with internal and intimate conflict, searching for truth, embodiment, and resolution.”

Produced with her brother, Jake Sokolov-Gonzalez, the two built these arrangements together over the span of two years. The seven-track release was mixed by Grammy winning engineer Jon Rosenberg and mastered by Ryan Schwabe (Nick Hakim, REI AMI).

In the fairytale-esque story of “The Bear”, RSG reflects on an encounter with a shadowy figure who doesn’t have the best of intentions, and the intrigue and challenge of making a boundary in this context, as she sings, “It would be wise to tell him ‘no, my arms are closed.’ I can’t decide which way to go, can’t feel my toes.” The pre-chorus, which evolves through the song, shows the center of this conflict. In a similar thematic vein as the other songs on the album, “The Bear” grapples with a need to be desired, even for one night, even if all signs are pointing in the other direction. Contrasted with a playful musical arrangement, this song turns a hard feeling into a playground of imagination and possibility, turning shadowy characters into bears and crows, turning doubt upside down and finding its flirtatious, sexy edge. Sonically “The Bear” combines Jazz-infused, sultry sax lines by Leland Baker, storytelling folk lyricism and moments of grooving R&B rhythms, creating something entirely unique, yet comfortingly familiar.

GET TO KNOW: LAUREN PATEL – ACTOR

Lauren will make her screen debut in EVERYBODY’S TALKING ABOUT JAMIE, the feature film adaptation of the hugely successful West End Musical of the same name.

Inspired by the 2011 television documentary Jamie: Drag Queen at 16, the story follows a 16-year-old teenager as he overcomes prejudice and steps out of the darkness to attend prom in drag. Lauren will play the female lead ‘Pritti Pasha’, a muslim girl who is Jamie’s best friend and ally.

Originally from Bolton, Lauren was cast as ‘Pritti’ after responding to an open call for the film, whilst still studying at college.

We popped round for a cup tea and a chat … in a digital sense .. ha..

“Stop waiting for permission to be you”

Heyyyyy Lauren … virtual high five … how’s your day been?
Great thank you! I’m trying to enjoy the sunshine as much as I can before it disappears again, hope you’re having a good day!

How did you get into acting?
I’ve always loved acting and performing (and attention) since I was a kid. Me and my brother would force our parents to watch us put on entire musicals in our front room (like all 2 and a half hours – poor guys), I’ve always loved the sense of community you get from working really hard on a show and I was an extra on some tv shows growing up. I hadn’t started considering it as a full-time job until I was in sixth form college, the original plan was to do acting a university and see where it took me and them Jamie came along!

What was it like filming your first feature film?

It was … wonderful, insane, terrifying, and honestly just an experience I’ll never forget. It all happened within such a short amount of time that it really didn’t sink in for a while. I just kept taking it one day at a time and was surrounded by such great people who just made it so fun to be at work.

What do you think the message of “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” is?

My character has a line in the movie that I think sums it up quite well, she tells Jamie to “stop waiting for permission to be you”, I feel like throughout the film we see Jamie discovering who he really is and in the end being much happier for it.
DREAM BIG

What’s been your biggest challenge in your career so far?

I think one of the biggest things was convincing myself that I could do this in the first place, stepping onto the set on the very first day can be really daunting for someone who’s never said a line on screen before. But once I started to think of it as doing one scene at a time rather than a big overwhelming movie that people are going to see it made it a lot easier.

Do you prefer to be called an actor or actress?

I usually refer to myself as an actor, but I don’t mind either!  What would be your dream film to act in? I’m always going to have a special place in my heart for movie musicals, but honestly, I just want to do anything and everything – small indie films, voice acting, giant actions films, etc etc – it all just seems so fun!  What’s your definition of normal? I have absolutely no idea. I feel like my normal changes every 3 weeks, so I’ve stopped trying to guess.  How can we all create positive vibes together? Log off twitter. What inspires you? Seeing people stand up for themselves and the people that they care about and seeing really great impactful stories being told in film and tv.  What’s your dream for the future? I just want to be able to keep making stuff, as long as I’ve got some scripts to read or something to write or a scene to do I’ll be quite happy. (and also, I want to get a cat)  How can social media be more supportive? I have a real love hate relationship with social media, I think myself and a lot of others find a real sense of community within it. But I think it is really easy to be sucked in and start comparing yourself or worrying about things that aren’t worth worrying about, I’m still trying to find that balance.

“I have a real love hate relationship with social media”

Do you feel pressure as a woman in today’s world?

100%. I’m having to make conscious decision to unlearn all of the ‘rules’ that have been drilled into me about how I should behave or how I should present myself.

What’s the question you wished HEY GIRL asked you?

I wish you’d asked me when the film was coming out and I wish I had an answer for you! We currently don’t a release date because of corona, but everyone involved is waiting to make sure it gets the best release possible!

Do you have any questions for us?

Is this your favourite interview that you’ve ever done ever? (the correct answer is yes)

Ha ha .. yes yes yes Gurl, loved chatting to you x

A big thanks to Lauren for her time and interview… keep an eye on this rising hot talent.

At the moment there is no release date for ‘Everybody’s Talking About Jamie’ , but the trailer looks amazing and we can’t wait to see it …

GET TO KNOW: FUCHSIA CARTER

I’ve always loved to perform. When I was between the ages of 16–18, I belonged to a drama school. At the time, I was very overweight, and as a result of this, I was incredibly shy. I started life modelling (posing nude for artists while they draw you) to try and overcome my insecurities and build my confidence levels.

To begin with I modelled fully clothed, and although I wasn’t yet baring all, I found it really helped me to accept my body. When I became disabled at 26 years of age, I lost myself completely and became trapped not only in the chair, but also inside my own head. I began to hate my body, and all that it represented. I was always a sensual being who loved sex and exploring my body. I was not ashamed to pleasure myself and thought I looked amazing, but then suddenly that all stopped. I would change in the dark and never in front of people, I would close my eyes when my carers washed or showered me. I couldn’t bear to acknowledge my physical state. My loss of myself.

In 2015, after losing a significant amount of weight, I had a bad fall which kept me in hospital over Christmas. During this period I thought long and hard about my life, and the role I had to play in this world. I felt like a drain on society, I felt like it wasn’t fair for people to have to look after me, just because of this one incident that had changed my life forever!

But then it dawned on me; I had to get out of the negative headspace I was in, and start to view and use my body positively. A friend of mine told me I looked beautiful and that I should go back to life modelling. I laughed at her when she said it, but after thinking about it long and hard, I decided she was right. I would also love to add that the amazing nurses at Eastbourne District Hospital kept telling me to keep going, to fight, that I meant something. One nurse had a stern word with me and then hugged me. I needed it. I needed that human connection.

When I got out of hospital I started to exercise my legs in bed, naked. I watched all my muscles working, and felt really proud that I had not given up. I started to appreciate my naked body; I began to like my curves and “wobbly” bits. I’m not perfect but damn, I’ve been through hell and survived! My body is definitely stronger because of it. I need to work some more on certain parts of my body. I am still single so I am not sure if all of me works despite me trying myself. But I am sure there is the right woman out there for me and together we can explore.

2 years on, I am slowly reentering the world of life-modelling and commercial modelling. I am signed to Zebedee management. It isn’t easy, but I’m giving it a good go — I won’t let it defeat me! The first time I took my clothes off in front of all of those strangers I wasn’t nervous at all! I felt euphoric and liberated. I was beaming inside. The fact that a wheelchair user was naked, and being drawn by so many people felt empowering. I felt free for the first time in my life.

However, I have lost out on many modelling jobs because of my disability. Once employers find out the chair is a permanent thing and not a prop, it changes their perception of me. It is like I am not “allowed” to be naked, because I do not fit the normative mould. I blame the media for perpetuating and promoting this one-dimensional representation of the body. Also a lot of my amazing “portraits” of me naked have been removed from the internet for violation of rules, including from Twitter and Instagram, and yet the likes of Kim Kardashian and her ilk are allowed all over Twitter. I can’t help but feel that that is discrimination. I didn’t have a nipple on show. But maybe a bit of public hair. Oh the horror!!!

But I have also lost out on normal acting jobs also. Again, when they find out the wheelchair is not a prop for the audition, I get all the questions like: Are you able to act? How will you cope with long hours? I’m not sure we have wheelchair access. All that bullshit. It’s so heartbreaking. I am a trained actor and yet I can’t use my training because of the closed mind of those in casting — and yet they are willing to put an able-bodied person in a wheelchair. Something we call “cripping up” and want awards and all the adulation, as if they have done the world a favour. I will show the world that we are just as worthy.

I have also been told over the years that I am selling out the disabled community, that I should not take my clothes off. I was shocked, but I thought about it. These people have been told for years that they are ugly, not wanted, not allowed to be sensual and naked. And here I am flaunting my sensuality and nakedness. That must make them feel worse. My whole point is that I want to show we are all bloody amazing. In reality, we are all different, and that is what makes us beautiful.

EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US IS BEAUTIFUL!
