You know the ones that are pink and yellow… taste strawberry style… well, going off topic — this new song from Noah Lefgren, “Baby Baby,” is like a musical version of them. Ha ha. This guy has such a laid-back groove he must be able to get under lower bridges no probs, just floats down the road.

Meet Noah. Mr Low-Fi Groove. This song has a fab, addictive (in a good way, must be the sweets) vibe, with rolling beats of soft funk. His creativity seems effortless. “Hey man, it would be good to have a video to go with your song…” “Sure, give me a few hours” — and he makes it. Lo-fi video style works so well because it’s authentic. He’s in the flow. The creative flow.

“Baby Baby” opens Noah’s new mixtape, Under Heaven; Tweak Us All. Eight tracks, self-released, and built to feel caught rather than crafted. Vocals sit low, buried in the mix, nothing explained, nothing tied up neat. It’s less a record you listen to and more one you happen to be in the room for. That’s the whole point. No polish for polish’s sake, just a guy logging exactly how he’s feeling, track to track.

“I think recognizing that, having that mindset where it’s like… If someone’s good, they’re good. Not really taking into consideration like gender identity, sexual orientation, like ethnicity, it’s like… yeah, if somebody’s good, they’re good. And work with them.”

“I think… actively supporting… particularly female instrumentalists, because they’re so underrepresented in the music industry. And, like, producers… Like, in circles I’ve been in, it’s kind of like a boys club. Where it’s, like, so many dudes, so many straight dudes. It’s like, if we can find a way to… bring more diversity into that. “

Who are some female artists you’d recommend?

“Beeson… a brilliant singer songwriter. Like the next Phoebe Bridgers. She’s brilliant.”

“Bryn Ripley. Best sax player right now… she’s been performing a little bit with… this, like, all-female band. And they’re brilliant.”

“Ella Feingold. She’s a trans woman, greatest guitar player in the world. She auditioned for Prince’s band before he passed… she was, like, too funky for him. Which I think to be too funky for Prince, is like… what are you doing? That’s crazy, you know? She’s brilliant.”

Shot to fame from a young age. A YouTube video at 8 years old doing a cover of a Led Zeppelin song. So cute, so good, she could barely touch the pedals. She has this crazy natural talent which is so inspiring.

Now she’s 16 and creating magic in jazz with a great collaboration with Ken Okada Group. She is the driving force in this song on drums. The effortless groove is remarkable, and she’s still only 16. Go back and watch that YOYOKA video below. Eight years old and drumming like a pro.

“Un Giro Per Napoli” is the title track from Azzurro’s new EP, out now on Sorry Mom!, and it sets the tone for the whole record. The song brings together Albert Peiró, Nina Blóm, Ananda Mele, GIN and LAIALAIA, a rotating cast of voices that turns one track into its own mosaic, Naples funk with Mediterranean melodies meeting rock and electronic textures.

The female voices on this one are full of cosmopolitan spirit. Nina Blóm has been putting out Italian-language pop since 2022, and this is her second time working with Azzurro this year alone, following her feature on “Fotografia.” Ananda Mele, a Brazilian singer-songwriter based in Barcelona, brings her own bossa-nova-meets-R&B world into the mix, the two have already worked together on her album Toda Terra. And LAIALAIA, coming out of Barcelona’s DIY pop scene, adds her own electro-pop edge to the record.

Emma Lucia & Ship Says Om Release New Single ‘Ditt Hjärta’

“Ditt Hjärta” comes from Djuphjärtad, the new collaborative EP from Swedish singer Emma Lucia and ambient project Ship Says Om, the work of Jenny Gillespie Mason. The two artists met through the Berkeley, California music community and became friends before they ever made music together. Lucia asked Mason to take some of her songs somewhere more atmospheric, more exploratory, and that’s how this whole world began.

“Ditt Hjärta” is sung entirely in Swedish, and somehow that makes it hit harder. You don’t need the words translated to feel what’s underneath them. Mason builds the track from field recordings, birdsong, wind, thunder, rustling trees, owls, the steady rhythm of oars moving through water, then weaves it all together with ambient synths, acoustic guitar, piano and soft percussion. Lucia’s voice moves through it like it was always meant to be there, luminous and unhurried.

The EP itself is called Djuphjärtad, Swedish for deep-hearted, and it moves between two currents. Songs like “Keep Me” and “Feel Your Eyes” hold the excitement of new love, while “Ditt Hjärta” and the wordless “Water Prayer” pull you somewhere quieter, more elemental. Lakes. Forests. The space between solitude and connection.

Listen to “Ditt Hjärta” and you’ll understand exactly why they called it deep-hearted.

Friends Of New Single ‘Not Quite Ready’

Here’s the beautiful song by Friends Of.

How can a breakup song sound so laid-back and cool?

Friends Of describes himself as a “disco cowboy” — and we love that. 🤠🪩 So we had to share this one.

“Not Quite Ready” is a song about knowing a love can’t last, but not quite being ready to let go. It was born out of feeling blindsided and heartbroken during Zeke’s last breakup, and was recorded with three of his best friends.

And somehow, he’s turned all that heartbreak into something you can actually dance to.

The first half has a psychedelic soul feel before the song opens up into a full festival dance-floor moment. Lush, layered vocals, strings and synths build something that feels both groovy and massive, with touches of Jungle, Collect 200, Say She She and Rio Kosta.

It’s the kind of song that makes you want to take an outdoor desert bath, lie back in the sun and let the sound wash over you.

Friends Of is the solo project of Zeke Reed, a Topanga Canyon musician who blends disco, house, indie and psych with his love of western wear and vintage Americana. He calls his sound “desert disco” — daytime dance music with a psychedelic twist.

A classically-trained cellist, Zeke started making his own music while studying neuroscience and philosophy at the University of Virginia. He lives in a 1971 Airstream in Topanga and records in an old tool shed overlooking the canyon.

We love the idea that a broken heart doesn’t always need a sad song.

Sometimes you just need to put on your dancing shoes, get some sun and keep moving.

Friends Of is giving heartbreak a dance floor.

QUICK Q&A WITH ZEKE REED

How would you describe your style?

I describe my style as “desert disco,” daytime dance music with a psychedelic twist.

How can guys be more of an ally?

Friends Of is a very inclusive and collaborative project by its very nature, and around half of my collaborators are women. Musicians, photographers, filmmakers, managers, DJs.

The project wouldn’t be what it is without all the talented women I get to create and work with. I think being an ally is about lifting up other voices in addition to your own.

What’s your dream for the future with your music?

My dream future with music is to collaborate with my musical heroes and play curated, interesting shows around the world in beautiful locations.

I’m not as interested in just playing clubs or run-of-the-mill festivals. I want my music to be part of immersive, one-of-a-kind experiences for people.

I’m working on a tour of vintage stores across the American West for this next spring. And that’s just the beginning. I’m also growing my creative retreat studio space in the mountains of Topanga Canyon to host artists from all over the world.

Who’s your hero?

My musical hero is Damon Albarn of the Gorillaz. He can collaborate with anyone and make it his own. His music is accessible and dancey yet weird and eclectic. And he’s built an immersive world around his project. I would love to work with him.

My nonmusical heroes are the journalists standing up for human rights and against authoritarianism in America and around the world. Often unsung, they put their lives and livelihoods on the line. As a journalist myself, I have the utmost respect for people who bleed for this profession.

Any questions for HEY GIRL?

“I’m curious what you all think the future of music journalism and curation looks like in the era of algorithms and AI music?”

We don’t like algorithms deciding what should be seen, what should be heard and what shouldn’t. We miss the randomness of life — those unexpected connections, discoveries and moments you couldn’t have planned for. We think people need more of that.

Some AI is fun and interesting, and it can definitely help tidy up your words or hone a creative idea. But real talent, real people and real human connection will always be so much better.

We think creativity isn’t valued enough in this world. Maybe if more world leaders were more creative, there’d be more understanding between people, more togetherness. Creativity isn’t an afterthought, it isn’t a waste of time, it’s the essence of being human. From the cave paintings and beyond, humans have always needed to express what’s inside them. Maybe if we all stopped and actually listened to each other’s creativity more, the world would be a kinder place.

No label. No co-writers. No committee smoothing out the edges. Katia Pojidaeva writes it, sings it, produces it, and puts it out into the world exactly as heavy as she wants it to be. She calls it grunge-noir.

“Capitalism” is a hypnotic, industrial track built on a heavy, sinister beat, and it doesn’t flinch. There’s a theatrical epicness to it, stage show vibes, production values that feel far bigger than what you’d expect from an independent artist working alone. The chorus lands on one brutal realization: we’re all just cogs in a machine built to enrich someone else. The single spells out the loop most people never question. You’re born, you get educated, you spend your one life working for someone else’s mansion, paying off loans and mortgages and corrupt banks, and putting off actual living until there’s none left to do. No fake positivity, no soft landing, just the truth stated plainly and set to a beat that gets under your skin.

Her debut single “Inherited Scars” went just as hard, taking on deep generational trauma and the fight to break free from toxic family loops. Ulmenthal Releases New Single ‘Let Me’

Ulmenthal. Let Me

Rolling beats, rolling beats, roll on, wait what? where’s this song going to take me?

The new track by Estonian artist Ulmenthal is the kind of thing that makes you want to know everything about the person behind it. “Let Me” feels like breaking free. It’s a freedom of energy that quietly asks whether just being yourself is enough. Spoiler: it is.

Eeva Trei is the singer-producer behind Ulmenthal. She cooks up something she calls “hypnopop” or “sad disco,” pulling flavours from Frank Ocean, Kate Bush and FKA Twigs.

The result is a sound that’s entirely her own. Skittering UK garage beats rub shoulders with a deliberately out-of-tune upright piano.

Together they give the whole thing a lopsided warmth. On top, her vocals drift in dreamy, soulful layers, all soft edges and choral-trained control. Then there are the glacial, shimmering synths.

Altogether, it’s a track that works just as well at 2am alone as it does on a packed summer dancefloor.

“Let Me” is the opening chapter of Ulmenthal’s forthcoming debut album, co-produced alongside Taavi-Peeter Liiv. It was originally written in 2025 for an Estonian songwriting competition, long before it found its place as the first taste of the record to come.

That journey shows in the finished track. It feels meticulously crafted, but never loses its emotional instinct.

Ulmenthal Let Me: Breaking Free Through Sound

At its heart, “Let Me” is about surrendering to the unknown. It’s about the twists and turnabouts that end up shaping us more than any plan ever could, the relationships we treasure, and the opportunities we never saw coming. Ulmenthal isn’t interested in genre labels. Once you hear it, honestly, neither are we.
